There's so much I love about Alaska. It all lives up to the name or everything you've heard about it. The epic scenery, the northern lights, the bare nakedness of wilderness where people hunt fish and hike. To this day, I am still blown away by its beauty. Alaskans know how to take advantage of summertime. Everyone gets out because we all know what's coming on the other side of summer. We have a short autumn where the leaves and scenery change into beautiful colors of red, yellow, and orange. Shortly after, the snow comes and it's like most places, it can pile up on roofs, in driveways, and every little nook and cranny there is. It typically lasts until May after many places south of us have already moved into summer.
I live in the more southern/central part of Alaska. It doesn't get 24/7 dark in winter here. The least amount of sunlight we get typically is about 3-4 hours in the deepest depths of winter. After the winter solstice hits December 21st, minutes are added onto the hours of daylight we get every day until the summer solstice when it starts to fade again into winter. Winter can be hard for some. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it and mine is crochet.
I learned to crochet as a little girl. I was always a quiet one and found solace by myself doing my own thing. When I picked it back up as an adult it was almost like riding a bike. It didn't take long until I relearned some of the skills I was taught as a little girl and I was eager to know more. I watched YouTube videos and spent hours scrolling through content on Pinterest. I joined communities on Facebook and Instagram and I tried out different types of yarn and crafting tools. I started visiting Joann on a weekly basis and coming home with a new bag of yarn. My yarn stash and pattern library were starting to fill with oh-so-many projects. So many that I could barely keep up!
Over the years, I've crocheted for myself, for family, and friends. I've dreamt of opportunities to build and expand my work into something that everyone can share in and experience as well. I hope that my work can reflect the relationships I've had with people and the beautiful state I live in. I hope you all will join me. I have so much to share with you.
